Tahj Brooks had an incredibly consistent season for Texas Tech in 2024, rushing for over 100 yards in every game he played in. He had an equally impressive season in 2023 when he rushed for 1,541 yards and 10 touchdowns. Brooks is an older player (23 years old) and played five seasons in college, so there is a bit of mileage already on him. Being older, it is no surprise that Brooks is one of the more advanced runners in this class.
Brooks has really good vision and patience on film and he sets up his blockers really well, however he seems to lack the athleticism to take advantage of it. His 8.59 relative athletic score is pretty average when compared to NFL running backs, and it shows up on film. His breakaway percentile is in the bottom 15% of our model, meaning he doesn’t hit many home runs. What Brooks does well is hit a lot of singles, which helps keep the offense on schedule. I thought Brooks was one of the best blockers in this class, and Texas Tech trusted him in one on one situations to pick up his man and protect the quarterback. Brooks unsurprisingly was a consistent pass catcher during his career at Texas Tech, with over 25 catches the last 3 years.
Brooks player comparisons are pretty positive for a running back you will likely be able to draft in the late 3rd of your dynasty drafts. Bigsby, Hubbard and Brown have been great fantasy assets for their owners, and if Brooks can carve out a career in a similar fashion he will be worth his weight in gold compared to his ADP. Although we still have some doubts that Brooks will make a significant fantasy impact in the NFL as our RB14, there are worse dart throws to take depending on where his ADP settles.
Film Notes:
Rushing:
Excellent vision, but lacks athleticism to take advantage of it
Outstanding patience
Sets up his blockers very well
Above average wiggle
Disappointing power and contact balance given how stocky of an rb he is
Legitimate ball security concerns
Receiving:
Below average, doesn’t do a whole lot here
Blocking:
Will take on bigger defenders, pretty good technique
Occasionally whiffs
Offense will truly slide protection and trust him to pick up his man 1 on 1
